I was given an assignment in my english class to write a problem/solution essay. I was almost side swiped by a driver on a cell phone so I decided to make my topic over cell phone safety in cars As I researched my topic I became aware of how big the problem is. I absolutely agree with the need of state-wide education and awareness of this problem. I also would like to see a ban of cellular phones in moving vehicles. Along with my essay, I had to give a five minute presentation. I printed out the two flyers from your website to distribute to my class. I am pleased to say they found the information astonding and were shocked to realize some of the research, accidents, and reports. I would like for you to know you have at least 20 more educated drivers in this world. I aspire to become a lobbiest and I this is one issue I am already lobbying for. I believe your fight has brought the attention to many people about the uses of cell phones while driving. I am not a cell phone user. I take public transportation everday. As I wait at the bus stop, most times I see accidents waiting to happen because of careless users. The statistics (which are very few and out dated) states, the majority of accidents lie between the ages of 20 - 26. In addition, most are college students and working professionals. I am curious if you have head any updates on the legislation for New York with regards to banning the use of cell phones while driving. Also if there is any comment you can provide me about what insurance companies are saying about this issue. Is it bei g addressed? It is strange to see a majority of countries that ban the use of cell phones. Many countries who are not freedomly liberated as us. What does it take to get our country to notice that we have a serious problem on our hands. Do we have to ait until another tragic accident to get people to be concerned? How come none of our Presidential Candidates mentioned this issue in there debates? How come the media did bring this up as a question in the political debating session between both Candid tes? It is a shame I never though about this issue until I had to do a persuasive speech for college. If I could persuade 20 people it's a begining. |

If anyone is still unwilling to stop using cell phones while driving after reading your story...maybe they should con- sider the link of brain cancer to cell phone use (I have recently heard that the earphone jack is now considered an even greater risk in relation to cancer). I can't imagine anyone willing to suffer and shorten their life with cancer of the brain, just for the convenience of using a cell phone for a couple of years. We all know that drunk drivers are a risk to us all...and now, even otherwise responsible drivers pose a threat to everyone...including themselves! The other day I observed a woman making a left-hand turn in a busy intersection...in her right hand she had a LIT CIGARETTE and THE STEERING WHEEL...in her left hand she had a CELL PHONE HELD TO HER EAR! Tell me she was following the suggestion in the PA Driver's Manual on page 36 (Pub. 95/3-99) where it states twice that, "You must be alert when turning." I hope that in the very near future, drivers won't even consider using a cell phone while driving, in the same way we don't consider stealing. ...AND EVEN WITHOUT A LAW TO STOP THIS, WE CAN ALL DO OUR PART IN MAKING CELL PHONE USERS AWARE OF MORGAN and hope that she can touch their heart enough for them to make their own decision to...DRIVE NOW - TALK LATER...just like your bumper sticker suggests. |

She also said there are no valid studies on the subject. I would like your permission to specifically reference your beloved Morgan and your website in my letter. Your website and your courage have inspired me to rejuvinate my efforts on this subject. I'd be honored to be considered your Northern California ambassador or whatever. Please respond when you can as I intend to draft my letter to the Chronicle over the eekend and fax or email it to them Monday morn. By way of "bio", I am a recently retired lawyer and newsletter publisher, I have four wonderful adult children and one awesomely handsome 10 month old grandson. At the risk of being immodest, I have been driving ovr 40 years and have never been in an accident. Here in Japan,legislation was installed a while back to prevent the use of these damned cell phones in vehicles,but for all the good it has done,you might as w ll try flying to the moon! In this country,people have every conceivable gadget in their cars,and totally ignore the government orders not to use them while driving. Japan has the most inept police force in the World,and the most anyone can expect is a sl p on the wrist,and a polite request not to do it again! I`ve lost count of the number of times I`ve been tailed by trucks doing 60mph,whilst talking to their fellow drivers on the phone! It makes you feel like taking the law into your own hands! I noted that the CNN article mentioned Japan as a country enforcing this law,so I thought I`d let you know that this is simply not true. It`s a toothless tiger! The driver was "absent." Such tragic events as your loss... Preventing them is part of my work: "Absentism" is a technical term I coined. I intend it to replace the word, "Depression." Depression is these days called (often defensively) an illness. That is, it is usually understood as a medical disorder and is studied and treated by the branch of Medicine we call "Psychiatry"--from Greek psuche ("soul") and iater ("one who makes people etter by cutting into them and/or administering medicines"). Absentism, by contrast, is an inability. It is an attentional disorder that is treated (more or less well) by attention. "Attention" is the name of the new professional discipline and academic field I am struggling to invent as I complete my Ph.D. in The Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago. My Ph.D. will be from The CST in Attention: Guy Parker, A.D.
